In the Heart of the Sea book is written by an American author Nathaniel Philbrick who is the winner of the National Book Award.
Nathaniel Philbrick is best known to write on various genres including ocean survival, and nature. His best books are In the Heart of the Sea (2000), Revenge of the Whale (2002), and In the Hurricane’s Eye (2018).
In the Heart of the Sea Summary
The story of In the Heart of the Sea sets in August 1819 on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, when American Whaleship Essex leaves for hunting whales in the Pacific Ocean.
The Whaleship Essex is a giant ship that weighed 238 tons and was 87 feet in length.
We have some short glimpses about Nantucket Island, its past history and how children are taught to hunt whales at an early age, and how Whale hunting becomes a crucial part of natives and makes Nantucket the biggest player in collecting Whale Oil.
Now we are introduced to the crew of the ship, George Pollard the captain of the ship, first mate, Owen Chase, Thomas Nickerson, who was a teenage cabin boy and there are some either African American people.
It was pleasing and clean weather when Essex leaves for its mission to collect Whale Oil under the leadership of George Pollard. Furtherly Essex was first encountered with a heavy storm that’s where it clearly lacked decision-making capabilities.
After passing several months without spotting a single whale, the crew comes to know about a spot called Offshore Ground which is a mile far from land as well as hundreds of whales are located there which is well enough to fulfil their Whale oil needs in one shot.
While hunting for whales on Offshore Ground, a demon Sperm Whale rammed the Whaleship Essex, sinking it and leaving all the crew from Essex surviving on three tiny boats.
The entire crew of the Essex are divided into three small groups by the captain for increasing their survival chances. Looking for food supplies and shattering their struggling journey continues for 90 days.
While peregrinating for food and water, they find an isolated island where some wild birds are spotted, as well as some old human skeletons, indicating no chance of staying there.
Collecting some water and due to having very low supplies, three crew members with severe injuries were elected to stay on the island while others leaves the island with optimistic perceptions.
Unfortunately, this is not going to help and some crew members started to die due to starvation, parallelly one of the boats separated from the others breaking their morale completely and cannibalizing their death.
After surviving hardly for 90 days in the middle of the ocean, finally, their efforts pay off when Pollard and Chase’s crew reached the shore of the Island, later they are rescued by the officials to the Nantucket successfully.
One of their group having three members also recovered making a total of Eight survivors in this terrible incident of Whaleship Essex, and their life back to happy and pleasing at the Nantucket island.

In the Heart of the Sea is one of the best non-fiction books ever written on survival in the Ocean, the story is beautifully drawn by the author giving it a natural sound for the readers.
The most important aspect you will experience while reading this book is the relationship of humans with nature and how karma will not forgive for doing molestation of nature’s beauty.
It is adapted into a major feature film of the same name starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, Cillian Murphy and Benjamin Walker.
