The plot of Flowers for Algernon book begins with a 32 years old intellectually disabled man Charlie Gordon who lives in New York City.

Charlie works a menial job as a janitor which is owned by his uncle Mr. Donner who adopted Charlie at an early age after being abandoned by his family.

Charlie also used to go to a college centre in Beekman and attend classes over there to improve intellectual disability, where he founds a teacher Alice Kinnian who was impressed with Charlie’s curiosity to learn.

Alice Kinnian does several experiments in the laboratory and he selected Charlie to undergo an experimental surgical technique to increase intelligence and advice him to keep a journal.

This technique is already been performed on various animals to avoid any severe issues with humans, among animals, Professor has achieved the greatest success on a laboratory mouse named Algernon.

That’s why the entire experiment, progression report, and narrative were named “Flowers for Algernon” which is written by Charlie to keep tracking his progression by the directors of this experiment.

The experiment got successful, and Charlie along with Algernon goes to a psychological test and training, Charlie gains a huge improvement in his intellectual thinking capabilities like Algernon.

After this test, Charlie finds himself unable to differentiate the human emotions and has difficulty understanding how to respond to someone’s emotions.

Charlie is deeply attracted to Alice but now he is capable of solving moral dilemmas as well as he recalls his memory of how his mother shunned him for sexual impulses.

Charlie’s life is completely changed now from having a low IQ man to an extraordinarily genius man, but suddenly Charlie started to worry as soon as he sees the drastic changes in Algernon as Algernon starts to lose all his intellectual gains.
